“New! English translation of eyewitness Red Cross account of 1948 Deir Yassin massacre
“The [Zionist] troop is in field uniform, with helmets. All young people and even adolescents, men and women, armed to the teeth: pistols, machine guns, grenades, but also big cutlasses that they hold in their hands, most still bloody. A young girl, beautiful, but with the eyes of a criminal, shows me hers, still dripping, that she carries around like a trophy. It’s the cleanup crew that certainly carries out its work very conscientiously…”

“Jacques de Reynier, Red Cross representative in Jerusalem in 1948, is considered the most prominent eyewitness to the Deir Yassin massacre, part of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians to make way for Israel. In 1950 he wrote a detailed account in French of what he found that day.
“In honor of the refugees and of Nakba Day, If Americans Knew has produced, for the first time, an English translation of de Reynier’s gripping account…
“Below the translation we’re making available, free, the full text of a chapter entitled “Massacres and the Conquest of Palestine” from Alison Weir’s book, Against Our Better Judgment, that gives more context about the Nakba.

Like many I grew up on movies with German SS and soldiers machine gunning line-up civilians, or shooting them so they fell into mass graves. The news from the hospitals of Palestine has brought all that sick queasy horror back. It's a sobering support to hear the same comparison from someone who actually directly witnessed both. The documentaries we later grew up with, too, showing images of starved and dying inmates at death camps, have twinned in the stricken images of families and children in Gaza. As usual it's hard to breathe, knowing I am standing in the middle of all this happening now.
Thank you 🇵🇸 ✊
